The Others Art Fair
A report by Billytown's Sanne Luteijn
Billytown participated this year with Rianne Groen at The Others Art Fair in Turin. One of the side fairs to Artissima, more to be compared to an art fair like Poppositions in Brussels. The Others exists since 2011 ‘with a precise identity and purpose: to select new talents, new
spaces, cultural associations that reflect the variety and complexity of the contemporary art landscape.’ The locations of the fair have been unconventional like an ex-prison, ex-stock exchange and since 2016 in the former hospital Regina Maria Adelaide. This last one was also the location of this years fair coordinated by Bruno Barsanti.
Rianne Groen x Billytown
For The Others, Rianne Groen (Rotterdam) and Billytown (The Hague) have combined two artists of each gallery in a collaborative presentation. Both Kim David Bots and Wouter van der Laan work multidisciplinary and with site specific installations. The collaboration was initiated especially for the fair and asked them to collaborate and with that perceive their own artistic practice in a different light. Both artists collected a personal archive, which often functions as source material for their work, providing a foundation for their work in a personal narrative. Both artists have quite recently started to explore working in more site specific installations. Where Van der Laan emphasizes elimination in the process, wether that is painting, digitally or otherwise, Bots chooses to research the personal in the narrative of daily life (text by Rianne Groen).
The ‘sala d’attesa’ was part of the ‘Specific’ section of the art fair. Referring to the more site specific rooms of the former hospital. All participants of this section reacted in one way or another to the former use of these rooms.
The others at The Others
Here’s a small impression of the other exhibitors at The Others, but I did not get the chance to photograph all the presentations I wanted, like 3:e Våningen/3:rd Floor from Gothenburg, Sweden or CLOVIS XV & SUPERDEALS from Brussels.
